Big News for Truss & Ore!

December 08, 2014

We are headed to the West Coast!

Some of you may already be privy to this news, but it is now pretty darn official. We have just signed a lease for an adorable apartment in Noe Valley, at the top of one of the steepest hills in San Francisco!

There is a great view of the city from the top of 22nd Street.

There is a great view of the city from the top of 22nd Street.

Let me tell you though, the struggle is real. Apartment hunting in San Francisco is a much bigger challenge than what I have experienced in Chicago. So, in case you are considering a similar move, here are some things I've learned:

- Unless you're moving there from Manhattan, prices are going to be much higher than what you are used to. For less space. Much less space.

- You should be ready to make a quick decision and come to showings prepared with credit reports, proof of income, and likely your checkbook. First impressions count and being prepared at an open house with lots of other interested parties can put you ahead.

- The city is colorful in character. Hone in on the neighborhood that best suits your personality and focus your search there.

- Craigslist is still a wonderful resource, even in the age of fancy apartment finding apps.

- Rent controlled buildings are your friend. Places that offer short leases for your first few months in this new city are likely to jack rent prices up as soon as that short lease is up.

- It's all totally worth it.

There are so many things I already love about this city and I'm so excited to fall in love with the rest of it!

Process: Making a Very Special Wedding Band

January 23, 2018

My favorite thing about making jewelry is connecting with people, often in a sentimental way. (Yes, I’m a huge sap). When a piece I’ve made means a lot to someone else, that’s simply a great feeling and genuinely makes me happy. It was such a joy to make my best friend’s wedding band, I thought I’d re-live the process and share it with you here.

STUDIO: Leah Staley Jewelry

March 21, 2017

I met the talented Leah Staley through ceramicist (and previous STUDIO feature) Gopi Shah - I love that the maker world is full of these wonderful connections. We had a great chat in her charming studio about her work, how she got into jewelry making, and the significance of art in today's society. Yeah, we got a little existential there. Haha.

STUDIO - Gopi Shah Ceramics

January 09, 2017

When Renegade Craft Fair paired me up to share a booth with Gopi Shah last spring, I gained a wonderfully kind and talented friend as well. Gopi is so warm and open, it felt like we were old friends right away. I was very excited to find out more about her beginnings as a ceramicist and see her in action in her studio in San Rafael. Her skill and artistry often made her work look effortless, though I now truly understand how much work really goes into each piece and her business as a whole.
